Happy Halloween

Here’s my creepy, odd, factoid about me. My most vivid memory of Halloween as a kid is from way back around 1981ish, back when I lived in Iowa and was about 6 years old.
That was back when the razor blade scare was getting serious. I remember that being the first year that I could not just run home and jump right into eating the candy. I remember sitting in my parents bedroom emptying the candy onto the floor and waiting for my parents to test the candy before I could eat it.
I still think the whole scare was made up by parents as a way to get a cut of their kids’ candy.
Happy Halloween.

Oh dude, don’t think we didn’t “test” a few pieces while checking through the kids’ candy tonight. You know…just in case.
But honestly, I haven’t found a good way to tell my oldest why we’re checking it. “Looking for razorblades and needles” doesn’t seem appropriate. Though I guess that’s what my folks told me, since that’s what I’m doing.

Yeah.
My dad used to declare all the caramels and tootsie rolls to be unsafe because they’d stick to our teeth.
And then, he would eat them.

You know, I’m not even sure how you would go about looking for hardware in the candy without completely destroying the candy. We only went to about 10 houses, they were all on our block, and knew almost everybody whose house we went to.
I did not worry about how to explain the whole scary mess to the kids….but I did eat some of their candy. I love Smarties.

I remember my parents worrying about razor blades. They use to take us to the hospital where they would do a free x-ray on our candy. It was pretty neat to watch!

I think as a kid I would have been freaked out about needing to have my candy x-rayed before I could eat it. Creepy. Perfect for Halloween.
