I like Pookie's elaboration. I hate giving spelling tests to kids, probably because I'm a big fan of invented spelling. I always try to make weird sentences to make the tests fun.

I always thought that I was a good speller back then just because I was such a good reader but maybe the connection between the two isn’t exact.

When I lived in Japan, I noticed there were characters I could read, but which I could not reproduce when it came time to write them--I generally could only remember a prominent feature or two. From that, I inferred that the memory for reading and writing must be different. In the case of the former, all you have to do is rely on your innate pattern-matching circuitry, whereas with writing, you have to have actually stored the steps to inscribe the character somewhere.
