I sometimes explain things like the age of the universe, the speed of light, gravity, and evolution with the kids. The kids play along reasonably well, BAGM barely rolls her eyes, and I get to sound like a nerd even more often than normal.

So, the kids were watching Fetch! With Ruff Ruffman tonight. One of the challenges involved understanding the size of the solar system. During that part, they mention that the sun is actually just another star like the ones we see at night.

Geetle looked over at me and said, “Hey, that’s what you told us that one time.”

“That one time” was a walk that I took with the kids late last fall. It was already pretty dark and we were talking about the moon and sun and solar system and that our sun is a star and that a lot of the stars that we see have planets that orbit around them.

I was proud of myself for working a science lesson into a family walk. I was even prouder that when Ruff Ruffman told her about it a few months later, she remembered that she had heard it from me first.
