I was reminded over at Three Kid Circus that today is the Winter Solstice.
That, means for all of us in the northern hemisphere, that it is the shortest day of the year. It would explain why my kids keep asking to go to bed around 4:30 every night. Take comfort in knowing that starting tomorrow, every day will have a little bit more sunshine for a while.
And, for all of you in the southern hemisphere, I guess that would make today your Summer Solstice. Make sure you let the kids stay outside late tonight. Your turn is coming soon.
For those of you living on the equator…I don’t have anything to say to you.

Shortest day of the year? Wow, that sounds pessimistic. A-glass-half-empty sort of mentality.
How about the longest night of the year?
That’s easy for you to say. Wait until the twins are born and let me know how much you look forward to long nights
Just for the record, while I do enjoy my sunlight, I am a bit of a night owl. So, the long nights don’t bother me all that much. But, when the kids start getting tired and asking to go to bed at 4:30 but you know they need to stay up until 7 so that they will wake up at a more reasonable time…that’s when the long night turns into a bit of a bummer.
