Favorite Christmas Day Memories

Growing up, we normally managed to spend most of our Christmases at home. Relatives would come in and out of the house most of the day and there was always a ton of food. My mom always went crazy preparing the meals and all the junk food.

A lot of the Christmases blur together in a crazy mix of opening way too many presents, eating way too much food, and playing with all of the way too may toys.

My parents normally, in addition to the way too many presents, bought one big, special present for me and my sister. Stuff like a trumpet, Nintendo, computer.

That big, special present was almost always given to us last and normally not placed under the tree. Our present unwrapping frenzy would begin to wind down and mom or dad would send us to their closet, the garage, under the coffee table to do some normal cleanup type of chore and there the big, special present would be.

Back when I was just about to start high school, my sister would have been in about 4th grade. We had a bigger Christmas than normal. My sister was unwrapping all of the presents and grabbing the next box without even pausing to see what she had just unwrapped.

And suddenly we were done.

Nobody sent us off to a weird cupboard to get a garbage bag. Nobody sent us to their closet to get “a present they forgot to bring out for Grandma.” We were just done.

So, my sister is standing there amongst all the shredded wrapping paper and unopened boxes and says, “Is that it?”

We all started laughing and haven’t quit making fun of her for it for about 20 years. In fact, I guess you could say I’m making fun of her right now.
