Too warm for snow, too cold for swimming
Post written by: beagooddad
I was all set this year to play outside with the kids a lot more this winter. We had the big snow storm early on and sledded in the yard and threw snowballs at each other. Then, it started warming up. We keep having days around 45 degrees.
I get the kids out of the house to take them to the mall (for the bookstore with the train set and the play area) but I have not done a good job of getting them outside to play.
For some reason, 45 is a really awkward outside temperature. I think it has a lot to do with it being hard to get properly dressed.
Anyway, I was reading Weary Parenting’s post about getting some new traditions started for the family this new year. I’m not a big fan of New Year’s Resolutions, but it was a nice reminder to get out of the house more. I think I’ll try to take the kids to the park after work or at least go for a walk around the neighborhood.
Do you have any good outdoor activities for young kids during those awkward in between temperatures?

A bike ride probably doesn’t count, does it?

I was in Lost nation, Iowa in mid-December and temps were in the 50s and 60s all three days but probably not comfortable enough for a family bike ride unless the kids were in an enclosed trailer.

I’m sure it doesn’t get so cold over here in the UK, but even on coldish days we have ventured out to the park (wet slides) and down to the croft. As for swimming? The floor of our house seems to be water. Bears and Ballerinas are being thrown into “the water”, and she even tried to step into a tiny picture of water in the dictionary. Hmmm.

The way your site is set up sometimes throws me off (but don’t change it, I’m slow, I rode the short bus). I looked at the title “Too Warm for Snow, Too Cold for Swimming,” and then the ads and I thought, wow, short post.
