Making up the holidays

For some reason I have been thinking a little about the whole Easter bunny giving away candy and toys during the same holiday where people celebrate Jesus rising from the grave and giving all humanity hope of escaping eternal damnation. Pookie has been starting to sing some of the songs from Sunday school. We don’t go often, but Pookie picks up songs pretty quickly most of the time. That must be why I’ve been thinking about it.

So how do you reconcile the two traditions to your sugar crazed kids that are not old enough to know that if they ever see a strange man wearing a red suit breaking into your house claiming to be giving away presents that your child should probably dial 9-1-1? Manicmama has a really nice explanation of the complexity of Easter to kids. Nice and simple and probably the right way to go about it.

You could probably also explain that the Easter Bunny is teaching us the lesson of giving to others and encourage them to share their candy with their friends.

If you are a little cynical and already had a couple too many drinks, you could say that we celebrate Easter because Hallmark tells us we have to…just like Sweetest Day and Bosses Day and Secretary Day. Don’t argue with Hallmark.

Or you could pick the sanest option. “Go ask your mother.”
