I’ve been tagged again. This time for the 5 Reasons Why I Blog meme running around the internet. This time I was tagged by Ray Dotson over at FreshBlogger.

5 Reasons Why I Blog

  1. Learn how search engines work – strange and dorky, but I had started a couple html websites way back before the year started with a 2 and was able to do some neat stuff but never did figure out how to get into a search engine. I was so focused on the html, javascript, and designing buttons I never got around to trying to get people to link to me. Who knew? I work with computers for a living, but nothing webby at all so I had a lot of knowledge gaps that could only get plugged by creating a site and doing some research. I rank #1 for “be a good dad” and #2 for “good dad”…maybe I should start working on “dad.”
  2. Learn how blogs work – I went through a phase where I would poke on the internet from 10pm until 2am for a while. I spent some of the time working on fiction and the rest reading about writing it. I happened upon a bunch of blogs on the topic and was hooked. I couldn’t believe how easy it seemed to maintain a website using this the blog code base. I just had to learn how they were put together and I’m still learning new stuff every day.
  3. Learn web design – Noticing a trend. I’m a bit of a tech geek. I had read a lot about CSS/PHP, wanted to brush up on my general HTML and knew that if I started a blog I would spend nearly an equal amount of time poking at the layout. I don’t make changes quite as much anymore but I think about them all the time. I have officially learned enough to where I doubt I would ever want to do it as a career.
  4. Make money – When I was a kid, I was really good at the levels of computer games that everybody else struggled with. I was perfectly content to play them over and over and over until I could squeak through them. Based on the amount of time that I spend writing, I make pennies on the hour, but it is the kind of work that is fun to me. Seeing the single digit number of digits that I make everyday is often more entertaining then seeing my real paycheck post to the bank account. Odd. If the single digits ever ended up reaching triple digits…well, I can dream, can’t I?
  5. Reach as big of an audience as possible – This blog was really started as something that I would just write to every few days or so. I never planned on it being my main one. My sixth post was called “5 reasons to teach your toddler sign language.” Bored one day, I submitted it to Reddit. It got 78 votes and made the front page sending several thousand pageviews over a couple days. Then it got picked up a several other sites sending even more thousands of pageviews. I could not believe that a parenting blog could ever attract that kind of interest. Since then, I’ve changed from the whole pageview fascination to being more concerned with writing well enough that people want to subscribe or comment. That’s the real audience. Those are the people that are going to come back…hopefully

You might have noticed that all of those reasons are geeky and techy and have nothing to do with being a good dad. But, if you didn’t know that was the main, real, primary, important reason, than apparently you’ve never read the title of this blog before.

For the record, I’m officially meme’d out. You can try to tag me, but you’ll have to catch me first.
