Another reason why dads should read to their children

I talked about why dads should read to their children a little while back.  We received a handout from Pookie’s preschool today that had a bunch of information about reading out loud to our kids and one of the bullet points was specifically about dads.  Check this out.

Fathers should make an extra effort to read to their children.  Because the vast majority of primary-school teachers are women, young boys often associate reading with women and schoolwork.  And just as unfortunate, too many fathers would rather be seen playing catch in the driveway with their sons than taking them to the library.

That part about most grade school teachers being women and boys associating reading with women is interesting.  Isn’t that almost exactly the same argument only with the genders reversed on why girls on average don’t seem to end up caring about math and science quite as much as girls.

So there you have it.  Not only does the crackpot author of this site think that dads (and moms) should read to their kids, the flier that followed my son home from school today agrees with me.

Interesting thought. I totally agree with it though it is not easy to do. A father should be the role model in all aspect of live.

I commend you for reading with your child. I read with all of mine, and I think it made a huge difference in how quickly they picked up reading.

Although it is tempting to skip it, I read to my four boys at least 5 of 7 nights a week. I make them take turns at spelling the letters in the title or reading sentances on certain pages. I’ve become very good at reading upside down so they can all see any pictures that go with the story.

I admit that I occassionally fall asleep while reading to them, but I usually get a quick slap to the head to finish the story.
