What will your kids be when they grow up?

When I was young, I had no idea what I was going to be when I grew up.  By the time I entered high school, I new I was destined for the NBA.  Four years later, I capped out at 6′ 2″ but never learned to dribble well enough to be a point guard for the Chicago Bulls.

I am having trouble with a program that I am working on at work and started wondering how I ended up as a programmer.  It really was mostly accidental.  A boss moved me from data entry job that I had right after I got out of the Air Force into programming because he knew I was interested and he had just lost a person.

At 3, Geetle and Pookie have almost totally opposite personalities and I would be willing to guarantee that they will end up in very different careers.

I see Geetle ending up in an a job where she gets to be in charge and talk non-stop.  I could see her as a teacher considering all of her aunt’s and her uncle are teachers and one of her grandmothers just retired from teaching.  She’ll probably want to teach the early grades of grade school so that she can have a hamster in the class room.  I could also see her in a sales job.  She is pretty convincing and persistant when she tries to convince us of things that she needs.  Fortunately, she has accepted that waiting until Christmas for most things that she wants is okay.

Pookie is probably going to head into a job where he can tune out the rest of the office and bust through his project.  But, the environment will have to be high energy and social when he is not locked in on the task at hand.  I could see him as a programmer for some hip web startup.  He would do well in a place where they let him play pool between blocks of code.  I could also see him going into graphic arts.  He is pretty obsessed with colors and can already draw a smiley face.  He just needs to pick which hand he wants to draw with over the next couple of years.

Based on what you have seen so far, what do you think your kids will be when they grow up?
