A great idea to do this type of series. You are so lucky that Pookie doesn't have any real food issues. This is not the case at our house -- we often feel ruled by their sensory issues where food is concerned. But I found a lot of useful information in your post that we may just try to implement... :) thanks.

Great post. I'm looking forward to this series.

The most notable "table rule" in our family is one we call the "Daddy Rule" that only applies when we eat out. It originated a few years ago when I noticed that every time we'd go to a restaurant (and I'm talking every single time), the kids would goof around without eating much until long after I was done. Then we'd spent another 45 minutes waiting for them to eat.

So I created a rule (very loosely enforced, but often quoted) that within a reasonable time after I'm finished, we get up and leave. I've actually enforced it on a couple of extreme occasions.

It's mostly a fun thing (as opposed to a real rule), but the kids know that if they goof around excessively, they may not get to finish their meal, and no meal means no desert.

Great post and cute picture. That kiss the food and then lick the food thing I will have to try when my daughter gets older. One of the things we have already started is for her to sign "more" to get more food. She used to whine but now uses the hand motion. Eventually she will be able to say the word, but for now that is what we are using.

I admire your persistance with your rules and the consistancy and support between BAGD & BAGM. You have made the rules positive and simple.
Another list could have said 1. No TV on the table, 2. no special forks, 3. no foods that are not even tried.. just off limits, 4. no eating before others all sit down, 5. no soda at meals, 6. no cleaning up before everyone is finished, 7. no eater specific menus, 8. no vegetable variety, 9. all meat-heavy menus, 10. little knowledge of nutrition 11. No desire to improve the situation... because "brief, simple positive rules would not necessarily apply to royalty".
BUT.......luckily healthy families can survive both positive and negative times and members can morph into great adults. LOVE MOM
