Kids are so cruel

Recently, as in the last couple weeks, the kids have been waking up, heading downstairs, sometimes eating breakfast, and then starting to play with the toys and read books before we even get out of bed. Not bad for 4 1/2 years old

They also go to bed without any issues and don’t wake up in the middle of the night. Wait, that’s not quite right. Geetle wakes up around 1 or 2am and pees and puts herself back to bed. She doesn’t even flush because she doesn’t want to wake us up.

Jealous yet?

So, after 4 years of great sleepers but early risers (because I normally am at work at 6am) we now don’t even have to bother waking up with them. In fact, my mom came over to babysit this morning at 7am and Geetle had to run upstairs to wake me up to unlock the chain on the front door (sorry about that, Mom).

You might be wondering how this makes my kids cruel.

Any second now (or day or, god forbid, week), we are going to be having another baby. Another kid that wakes up every 27 minutes to beg for food and clean diapers. I asked my wife tonight how long she thinks it will be before we stroll into the baby’s room at 7am some day after last visiting at 4:30am and find Pookie and Geetle in the room sitting on the floor reading books waiting for us to wake up.

I’m betting it happens within the first week we are all home. And then we’ll have to look into ways to keep the kids from opening the door. Or just teach them to feed the baby and change the diaper.

My kids are pretty good about going to bed as long as we do our routine, and they are also early risers. They do NOT get breakkies on their own though, since we keep the food locked up. If we didn’t keep it locked up they’d eat an entire box of Oreos for breakfast. But they are good about waiting for us to come down to make them breakfast.

I think teaching your kids to help change the baby is a GREAT idea – at least, the 4 1/2 year old.
