Pookie has switched favorite books on us again recently. His new favorite is Sleepy Time Olie by William Joyce.

When we march off to bed and ask him to pick out a book, he says, “Robot book” until we find Rolie Polie Olie.

I’m actually a minor fan of the TV show which I don’t think we ever really watch. Yeah, I used to watch the show every once in a while before we had kids. Shoot me. I should check what time it is on someday. On the TV show, the everything bounces like it is alive, even the house itself. Lots of good energy.

The book has the same computer graphic artwork. It is very vivid and busy providing tons of things for the kids to explore on each page.

The plot of this book revolves around the kids waiting for Pappy to read them a story. He comes home but is too bummed to read to them. Rolie Polie Olie makes a ray gun that cheers Pappy up and the family wanders off on a little adventure before returning home to fall asleep.

The rhyming is pleasant and the artwork is beautiful. During the adventure, the family travels in bubbles. If your kids like bubbles like mine, this will be a nice bonus.
My only complaint is that they got a little funky with the way they write lower case l’s and y’s. They make them look a little too cursivey for my taste. I imagine that a young kid trying to rid the book to themselves may have a little trouble deciphering those two letters at first.

Pookie gives it two thumbs up.
