A night on the town

I’m a boring homebody.  Except for having season tickets for Iowa Hawkeye football, I don’t really go out without Beagoodmom and/or the kids.

Last night, I called an impromptu Beagooddad fun night and went into Chicago.  I paid for public parking, had exactly 2 Cokes and talked to a few people that I had never met before.

Sounds exciting, right?

Well, Robert Scoble is in town talking at a PR conference today and flew in last night.  A few of the people that are attending the conference and a few local people met him for pizza at Giordano’s.

It was interesting sitting around listening to this guys talking about how blogs are affecting companies and culture and what needs to happen moving forward.  It was also interesting hearing perfectly normal conversations drop into marketing pitches for a second before returning to perfectly normal conversations.

I was the only guy just getting out of the house to hang out.  Everybody else had a business card or three to pass around.  I probably should have written down my web address on some paper or something for them or tatooed the URL on my forehead so it would show up in the pictures.

If you’ve always wanted to see a bad picture of me staring into space, Jeremiah Owyang posted some pictures.  I’m in the middle guy in the third picture.

Anway, interesting night.  Most of the time I end up in a group, I clam up and just stare at people, but I actually participated in the conversations.  Maybe there is something to hanging out with people who share interests.

By the way, I always thought Scoble was crazy for putting his cell phone number on his blog but it sure came in handy last night when I arrived at the original restaurant only to find it was closed for renovations.  I’m not sure I’m ready to post my number yet, but I now understand why somebody whose career revolves around his internet presence would put his phone number on his blog.
