Kids and cooking - Pizza night
Post written by: beagooddad
Beagoodmom is a great cook. The kids seem to have her enthusiasm with cooking, too. When she is cooking, they will often push their chairs from the table over to the counter and jump up to help her. They do not do that as often with me. Perhaps they can sense that I have trouble keeping track of all the meanwhiles and do not want to distract me.
One of their favorite things to make is pizza. Pizza can be an easy meal to make with the kids and easy to clean up if you are willing to buy some premade portions of the recipe.
We either start with Boboli crusts if we want a big pizza or little rolls if we want individual pizzas.
You should also buy a can of pizza sauce, some shredded cheese and then whatever other toppings you like. We normally use some combination of pepperoni, mushrooms, and green peppers.
If you have anything that needs chopped, I recommend doing that and opening the pizza sauce can and putting it and all the toppings in individual bowls before bringing the kids to the counter.
The kids love spreading the pizza sauce on the crust and then piling on the toppings. One of us puts the pizza in the oven. We don’t let our kids anywhere near the oven yet. The whole preparing the pizza process only takes 5-10 minutes and then about another 15 minutes to cook.
Besides being a good meal for kids to practice cooking, it is also almost guaranteed to get eaten by both the kids and the parents.

This is what we did for my oldest’s 5th birthday. Each kid had a prebaked crust, with a dallop of sauce on it to spread. They each had a snack sized baggie with cheese and pepperoni to top their pizza with. They loved it! We followed it up with cupcakes to decorate with all of the materials to make them look like little mice. Pretty cheap, and no games to have to organize! Fair warning: a bit of a messy party! I don’t mind the clean-up.
