Babies are so cute. I saw a 3 month old just last night and when he smiled he looked EXACTLY like his big brother. So adorable resting in his car seat while his parents pushed him around Target.
I remember when Giggles was cute like that and I used to say nice things to her all the time.
Now, approximately 85% of my conversations go like this:
Me – “No”
Giggles – [turns around to look at me]
Me – “No”
Giggles – [turns around to look at me]
Me – [moves Giggles to a different part of the house while she goes limp and then starts twisting and kicking while screaming]
Me – “No”
Giggles – [turns around to look at me]
Me – “No”
Giggles – [turns around to look at me]
Me – [moves Giggles to a different part of the house while she goes limp and then starts twisting and kicking while screaming]
[repeat until nap, meal, diaper change or bedtime]
Sometimes when she turns to look at me, she will shake her head to confirm that she did hear me but just doesn’t plan on paying attention.
Seriously. One and mobile is way worse the the dreaded terrible twos. I’ve met very few 2 year olds that I didn’t get along with. 1 and 3 are completely different stories, though.
And we only have so many surfaces that are up out of her reach and since her reach is getting higher every day, even those spots are starting to disappear.
This would probably be a great time for a parenting tip on how to survive this phase. I suggest getting a calendar, circling your toddler’s second birthday, and crossing off the days. They are so much nicer when they are 2.

You are *so* right. Twos were not a problem with either of our boys, but the threes were awful for both of them! We pretty much marked Little P’s fourth birthday and did as you suggested, marking off the days as we went along. The amazing thing was, it was almost to the day that his behaviour changed. Weird, but true.
At least we know there’s an end in sight, though, right? Even if that comes with their adulthood? And we’re old when it happens?
Absolutely on the 3s. I loved the 18-36 month age with mine, but 3-5? geez, louise.
I totally agree. I don’t have any kids, but have worked with them a lot. This past summer, I worked in a toddler room in a daycare (my youngest was 14 months, the oldest two were 19 months) and I had FIVE toddlers to myself. They were cute, but really pretty rotten sometimes. The few times I worked in the two year old room, most of them were delightful. Ditto for fours. Three was a different story. There were a few young ones in the two year old room, and a few older ones in the four year old room. They were the ones that ALWAYS caused problems in those groups. So I vehemently agree-tons of 1s are terrible.
